Berry Delicious Breakfast Bread Pudding

     Blackberry season is at its peak.  I can’t get enough of the big, sweet and small-seeded berries that Agriberry has been selling at the St. Stephen’s Farmer’s Market for the last few weeks.  Usually we enjoy them plain or in a cobbler, but I wanted to try something different yet, of course, not too complicated.

     Breakfast is always a challenge around here.  My son needs something hearty but not too sweet after a two-hour early a.m. swim practice.  He gets bored by the same old bacon and eggs, so I thought I’d spiff up Ina Garten’s Breakfast Bread Pudding with the bounty of beautiful blackberries that I can’t resist buying.  Using most of a sourdough loaf that I had in the bread drawer (Ina uses a brioche loaf), I’m delighted with the result.

  • 8 eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups half and half
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • peel from one lemon (or an orange)
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • sourdough or other hearty bread cut in to cubes to fill baking dish about 2/3
  • 1 pint blackberries (blueberries or chopped strawberries or peaches)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Preheat oven to 350º.  Butter a two quart casserole dish and set aside.

In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs and next five ingredients.  Lay half of the sourdough bread pieces in the bottom of the casserole dish, and scatter half of the blackberries and cheddar cheese (if using) in layers on top of the bread.  Then repeat with remaining ingredients.

Pour egg mixture over the bread combination.  Press bread down gently to be sure that all pieces are covered with the liquid.  Allow to sit for at least 15 minutes.

Bake for 55-60 until the custard is set.  Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Serves 6-8.

     What a great way to enjoy blackberries and get your day started on a yummy note.  I think that it tastes just as good reheated the next day, too.  Why not pick some blackberries up from the St. Stephen’s Farmer’s Market tomorrow and serve this Berry Delicious Blackberry Bread Pudding for Sunday brunch?  Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
